Spotted this morning on Damen just south of Augusta. I originally thought that a car had run into the bike rack and knocked it over, but the completely unblemished street light pole a couple of feet away made me think that someone removed this rack to steal a bike. Has anyone seen this before? I thought those racks were indestructible.

A U-lock couldn't be slipped past the baseplate, so this was not a theft attempt.
And smashing into bike rack to steal a bike? You're going to damage the bike AND your car. You'd have to be an idiot and/or driving a stolen car to attempt this.

Don't forget - we have a lot of crazy drunk drivers in the city. There's a restaurant on the corner - the entrance has been destroyed TWICE by crazy drunks piloting large SUVs.
It looks like the concrete gave and not the bike rack.
Word to the wise, never touch any part of a scene like that. Listened to a podcast about a couple that happened upon an abandoned car scene ... long story short ... it was a setup by police and the guy (who thought he was doing right by opening the trunk and looking for the missing driver) was booked / thrown in jail. Call 311 again and report.

I reported it to 311, for what that's worth (usually worth something but I think the request goes directly to the bike program, which I've surmised is on furlough due to the budget crisis.)

Walking to the store a little while ago . . . come upon a parked car with its trunk all the way open and a dissembled mid-high end Trek aluminum bike in it (with a floor jack and such).
I stand there dumbfounded . . . no-one around, look around the corner. Nobody anywhere.
Finally closed the trunk and moved on but if anyone sees me on some sort of hidden camera expose* let me know.

*how do you due the accent on a windoze peecee?
thanks everyone for making me feel better, sort of... guess it was a car and not bike thief after all.

It could have been a drunk SUV driving bike thief.
