Road hazard, please call 311

On Lincoln, in front of 3541, North bound is a bad sink hole right in the path that bike riders take. (Just south of Addison). This is NOT a pot hole, it's washed out under, there is no road there. This is potentially very dangerous.

First of all, watch out for it, second of all, please call 311, I did on Friday, but so far they have done nothing, not even a cone to mark it. If a lot of different people call in, maybe they'll respond.

There's been a small sinkhole here in Beverly for almost 6 months. I and many neighbors made 311 calls, starting back then. I was about to start another round, thinking it wouldn't get fixed before winter, but when I walked to the mailbox the other morning, I discovered fresh concrete. They fixed it! I've been seeing a lot of these late-season fixes around town recently. It can't hurt to make a few more 311 calls, but it's possible that your unfavorite sinkhole might be on the list for the next week or two.

Walked by the hole today and fished the warning sign thingy out. It's sticking upright-ish at a 45 degree angle. Will hopefully be like that for a while, but who knows.

We're nearing FIVE MONTHS and the sink hole is still there! The warning cone has been completely swallowed by it and the red warning paint is nearly gone. If you're looking for something to do today, please call 311, alderman Waguespack (773-248-1330), and anyone else we can to request the hole be filled! (Especially with our favorite season coming up!)

It seems to me that the city will only feel compelled to address these dangerous conditions expeditiously when it recognizes that it will be hit hard in the wallet if someone gets hurt. I went by this sink hole on March 18th, 2010. The city repaired it on or about that date (not just a cold patch). I'll go by it again tomorrow to see what the repair looks like.

I've encountered these a few too many times in recent years. A while back, I met someone in my neighborhood who works for the water dept., and asked him why these take so long. He explained to me that sinkholes are usually handled by them, not streets and san. Sinkholes involve some reconstruction UNDER the pavement (sometimes significant reconstruction), so they're much more complex to handle than a simple pothole.

I had one down the street from me for about 5 months last year and complained about it multiple times. It had only an orange cone for a few weeks, then they added a construction horse after more complaints. It wasn't a large hole, but it was deep, and wide enough for a toddler or small dog to fall into. When they finally got around to it, they had to excavate a larger area to rebuild the vault that had partially collapsed, then poured concrete.

The long timeline on these can be very frustrating, especially when it's an area with lots of bike and ped traffic.

Okay, explicame algo. Why is it that the city can tear up the street (Lincoln and Southport), repave it by the next day, but still not have filled in the gaping sink hole outside 3541 N Lincoln?

I shouldn't complain. The city did repave the intersection quickly and I'm happy they did. But I keep thinking I'll ride my bike over that sink hole and fall in.

I've just called 311 to report this but I thought I'd let y'all know as well, riding up Franklin street this morning, I encountered piles of manure covering the bike lane when crossing the Franklin Street Bridge. So, be careful to avoid the piles of poo if you're headed that way.

They really need to train those horses to clean up after themselves!

Given that there was far more than one horse worth of crap there, and that it was all the way over in the bike lane, I don't think it was a simple matter of a horse dropping a pile. I thought it was worth letting people know about it, 'cause you know what'll happen if it gets on your tires.

There's also a truck's worth of mulch on the path at Kenmore and Ardmore. It got dropped there last night, but a crew was out using it this morning. Hopefully it will be out of the lane by the evening commute.
