This morning I was riding from Riverdale into Blue Island and made a couple of disappointing discoveries. Not one but two bridges over the Cal-Sag Channel,
Division St. and Chatham St., are both closed to vehicular traffic with no signs to indicate construction. My guess is that they are closed for structural reasons. These have been the two most bike-friendly crossings on this section of the Cal-Sag, with less car traffic and lower speeds.
The sidewalks were not barricaded, so I used the sidewalk to cross at Chatham. The nearest bridges that are open to traffic are Ashland, which is wide and rideable, and Western, which I don't recommend except with a large group for visibility. The Western bridge is a high-speed deathtrap.
If you ride or drive in this area, be aware of these bridge closures. Ashland is the best alternate crossing nearby, and it will take you across both the Little Calumet and the Cal-Sag.
