The ever-entertaining tag team of IDOT and CDOT are gearing up for the planning process of epic proportions: North Lake Shore Drive, from Grand to Hollywood. IDOT would most likely enjoy seeing LSD continue down the path as an interstate lite rather than a boulevard that cuts through the park and hugs the shoreline. If you'd like to make your voice heard, the project team is hold three public meetings starting two weeks from now. They are on:
Tuesday, August 6, 2013, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Gill Park, 825 W. Sheridan Road, 3rd Floor
Wednesday, August 7, 2013, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Truman College, 1145 W. Wilson Avenue, Atrium
Thursday, August 8, 2013, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, 2430 N. Cannon Drive, South Gallery
A collection of non-profit and civic groups also drafted a set of principals that push the boundaries on what could be possible with the reconstruction, including aggressively pushing the expansion and improvement of the trail and its access points. That document can be found here.

Routing the bike path through those is a great idea.
Meetings start today!

I wasn't able to make it to any of the three meetings last week due to being out of town but am glad to see that the project has now added ways to provide comments via an online form, or you can e-mail them, or even use snail mail. It would be great to get lots of Chainlinkers to provide input! Remember that the project scope includes the Lakefront Trail, parkland, access points, intersections, etc.

Somewhat related, there is an effort to redo Clark Street in Lake View East, a survey is underway:

Ugh, they are presenting the street with the same crappy buffered bike lanes. Here's what I put in the comments section:
PLEASE no more buffered bike lanes. The bike lanes should be curbside, with car parking either eliminated or to the left of the bike lane. A physical separation should be present as well, either flexible bollards or raised above the car lane. Intersections should be given Dutch-style treatment.

Cobblestones... Yeah no. I grew up in Pittsburgh and there were still a lot of those streets in the 80s. Bricks are bad enough.
I took the survey and I thought they were also addressing up to Roscoe at some point, but yeah, totally agreed that you can't just look at a few blocks in a vacuum. Not to mention nobody really knows how the Ricketts/Wrigley Field drama will ultimately play out.

The scope of the Clark St. project is very limited, covering less than 1/2 mile of street from Diversey to Barry. While some of their ideas for transportation projects like a trolley may sound nice, it's important to think about connectivity at the end of the project area.
