The Chainlink

After spending the weekend fixing up my bike with new wheels and cables, I found it this morning with the handlebars taken off, hanging on by the brake and gear cables.  Someone removed and stole the rings that the handlebars sit on (it's a commuter-style).  I'm not sure if that means it was just vandalism, that they didn't have the right tools to take what they wanted (the handlebars?), or if that is actually a useful/valuable part to take.  I guess I'm pretty lucky nothing else was gone (thanks to wheel locks).

Back to the Recyclery I go...

*Insert lesson about leaving your bike out overnight here.*

If you leave your bike out for an extended period in any neighborhood, it will eventually be just a frame(unless they take the frame). I just dipped an old chain for a friend so she can lock her seat.

Had to make an unscheduled trip to the dentist yesterday and on the way out boss asks,"what are you going to do with your bike?" Me,"Lock it up somewhere." Look on his face was great, the 'are you serious' look. Came in this morning, "I see your bike was not taken." In disbelief he scans my bike trying to figure out how that could be. Then I spend a few minutes going over all the little thing I have done to slow or annoy those who would attempt to snag parts or the whole thing.

Pinheads on as much as I can

chain on the Anatomica saddle.

Wax in all the hex-bolts that  will not need to be frequently adjusted...

all from experience.

NICE! Thanks for the tip...

What size would you recommend for the typical allen bolt?

Interesting. I use an epoxy in the hex bolts for my daily bike (it's an outside bike) but for the "weekend" bike I'm putting together, magnets would be a much better solution. Good tip!

Any chance you could post a photo of how you use the magnets?  Or a product link?

I once had my helmet stolen off my locked bike.  It was on a super hot July day and the helmet was sweaty, who would steal someones helmet?? Especially in that condition.

I got my parts at the Recyclery!  Thank you to them!  Turns out they took the bearings, too. Is there some ball bearing huffing thing I should know about?

You guys are right about keeping your bike in.  And I definitely recommend wheel locks and other strategies suggested here.

I've had rims stolen on a 10 minute trip to the grocery store, while in sight while eating (though not ccontinuasly watched) and my latest pictured.
