Hey all. I'm originally from Iowa and was planning on joining up with my Iowa LBS to ride RAGBRAI 2009 (it will be my first time riding it) only to find out they are not taking a group this year. Does anyone have any information on local groups to train with, local groups to provide to/from bike transport, or local group to ride the event with (support wagons on ride, etc.)? If so, any and all information (name, contact info., website, approx. cost, etc.) would be much appreciated!!!

I rode RAGBRAI using OOS charter service. They took us from east to west, as well as our bags and bikes, set aside campsites nightly, had cheap beer ($1 per can) and transported bags daily. That was $250 and well worth it.

Fair warning though, RAGBRAI is majority 40-50 year olds partying like 18 year olds on spring break. I didn't drink all that much, but had a great time riding and eating. You can ride any pace you like, I fell on to some great pace lines that cut century day down a few hours.
I"m planning on doing RAGBRAI with a few friends (3 of whom did it last year).

If you can make it, show up to the bar night this Thursday, and I'm sure Martin and Evan would fill you in on ride details, etc.
I'm riding it this year... thinking of just doing it on my own. with help from family.
Thanks for the suggestion. I think a friend and I are going to try to make it tonight.

Thanks, also, to Jamie and Jon for your comments.
cool, I'll be there too! ice, snow and all!
just got notification that my group registration has been accepted and payment is being processed.

sweet!
You're gonna have the time of your life. Just remember to bring plenty of small bills in your back pocket, you'll be eating like a king...Breakfast burritos, pastafarian, peanut butter jam, church lasagna, I had alone 18 or 19 slices of pie, and of course, PORK CHOP MAN!

This is really weird, I was logging on to post a question about RAGBRAI and here the discussion has already started.

I went to Univ. of Iowa, and always wanted to do RAGBRAI. The closest I got was that my band won a "battle of the bands" and our reward for winning was playing the final night of RAGBRAI on a huge stage sponsored by Miller Beer. There were like 7,000 people there and we were treated like rock stars. Definitely one of my fondest memories.

Anyway, I hear that they limit participation nowadays. Any suggestions on bypassing the whole "lottery" deal and sealing up a slot?
well, actually, yes. It is "Oh noes" when you're 23 and have only heard hype about how it's a massive party on wheels. Although I have no aversion to hanging out with folks of all ages, when I'm partying, I prefer to be with folks closer in age who don't think that everything they do is "totally wild!"

Ragbrai limits registration to 10,000 riders, but another 5,000- 10,000 people ride each day. I've done it the last two years. The best way to enhance your experience is to join a team. I rode with Team Fat Tire (Mike James) is one of the organizer. I think their were like three teams associated with Fat Tire Brewery last year so contact me privately if you want his e-mail. Other teams that I've heard are good are Team Kermit (small Chicago team of Cyclist with a slight drinking problem. They go 20+ miles and hour. Team Pedal Faster also cyclist. Team Brew Ha Ha and Fat Tire Brewery are really partiers with a biking problem.

Good Charter Companies Branson and Pork Belly. If you go with a charter they will automatically get you an official Ragbrai registration.

I've done it two years and will probably go with a charter company this next year like branson. I will drive down to the Eastern side of Iowa (end of the race) and the charter will take us to the start. Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Hi, I want to do Ragbrai as well and the idea of a charter service seems ideal. However, I am wondering if any carfree Chicagoans have any ideas about getting to the ending town (which seems like place to meet the charter). Do people rent cars? Does anyone know of a charter service from Chicago to Iowa?
