As someone that has frequently taken Clark North to Sheridan on my way to Highland Park, I am always looking for alternatives that don't involve Clark. Especially on my return trip, Clark is so bad I will go a few miles out of my way to avoid it.

Streetsblog article reporting about plans to build alternative bike routes so that cyclists don't have to take Western or Clark:

The Chicago Department of Transportation recently held a public meeting about their clever proposal to install a contra-flow bike lane on Glenwood, between Ridge and Carmen, in Edgewater. More quietly, CDOT and the 49th Ward have been moving forward with an equally promising plan for a neighborhood greenway on Glenwood and and Greenview in Rogers Park.

CDOT staff declined to discuss the proposal, referring me to 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore’s office. “Our main goal was to create some kind of route from Devon Street, the southern boundary of the ward, up to Evanston,” explained Bob Fuller, an assistant to Moore. Glenwood and Greenview are already popular bike routes in Rogers Park, with cyclists accounting for up to 25 percent of rush hour traffic. “Instead of high-traffic streets like Sheridan, Clark, and Western, it made sense to put the greenway on these residential streets,” Fuller said.

The Greens (-wood and -leaf) are potholed nightmares, chronically dug up by utilities. That can't be fixed with bike lanes, and the route of less than 1.5 miles is out of the way or confusing for all but RP residents.
Protected lanes on Sheridan Road are the Holy Grail of North Side cyclists, period.
Ashland is a nice alternative to Clark. Sheridan is essentially LSD north, too much volume and a high speed limit. Much like Western,or Ashland, North ave. outside of Wicker some roads aren't for cycling.

I used to ride from near Senn High to the Howard Street Red Line and back several times a week and I got pretty happy with Glenwood-Pratt-Ashland. Unlike many routes around here it's both legal and comfortable to ride in both directions. But I suspect it's not an obvious route if you're not local.

Clark itself wouldn't be so bad if the road surface were better--it's wide enough here that there'd be enough room to stay clear of the cars if you didn't have to dodge the man-eating potholes. (Though it's much better now than it was a few years ago.)
