The Chainlink

While I was reading a news article about the city repaving some streets in advance of the IOC's upcoming visit, I had a moment of inspiration. Why doesn't Chicago propose a new Olympic cycling event or two? Some pothole-cratered streets could be preserved in their decrepitude for this very purpose.

Mountain bikers have technical courses, usually in the woods. How about an urban equivalent - the pothole course? Seems like a combo of slalom and jumps would be a natural. On second thought, BMX might be more suitable for maximum urban flavor.

What do you think?

Maybe it'd make for a fun pothole-themed cyclocross course!
Throw some cab and door dodging in and ya got an X-Game event...
Don't leave out the SUV drivers yakking on cell phones or the j-walkers.

Part of the course should take place on the lakefront trail, where you deftly avoid unattended children, absent minded yuppies tethered to Yorkshire Terriers and Teacup Poodles on long leashes, and teenage girls walking five across.

That's the spirit! Don't forget volleyballs flying across the path at random times near North Ave. beach for a true Olympic-level challenge.
