MY BIKE WAS REMOVED FOR CONSTRUCTION WITH NO WARNING. WHERE IS MY BIKE?!

My lovely hybrid was locked to a sign post for about six hours on Broadway and Sunnyside.  When I returned the street was torn up completely.  The alderman wants nothing to do with me.  How do I find my bike?

Call your ward's streets and sanitation office directly; 311 can give you the number if you don't have it.
I understand your hesitation to contact the alderman's office-- bet mine is twice as frustrating.

I was going to recommend calling the city bike program but on further thought I don't think they'd be able to offer anything useful in this situation.

Also please place a report on the Chicago Stolen Bike Registry -- it's being pretty widely used even by government at this point; and/or the workers might have just leaned it up somewhere and a do-gooder may have "rescued" it.
Call 311. They did the same with my car a couple years ago. Had to take a cab and go up and down a few blocks. Not sure what to do when its a bike!

Gabe,
Can you explain how calling 311 helped you in the situation you describe? Sounds like you were on your own . . .?
Is the stolen bike registry a lost cause if I don't know the serial number?
Excellent question.

Let's say a group of us were scouting flea markets, found a bike matching your description, couldn't reach you, and didn't have a serial number to check the bike against. We'd have to let it go.

Let's say a city worker leaned your bike up somewhere and then went to lunch, and some well-meaning person took it to "save" it and try to find the owner-- then no, the lack of a serial number would not negate the value of a registry listing.
