Milwaukee to Chicago cycling route?

Hello,

I'Hello,

I'd like to plan a bike trip from Milwaukee to Chicago this fall/winter. Do any of you folks know of any routes?

Chicago has a nice variety of events November through February. Do you have any suggestions?

For the annual Frozen Snot Century (Feb. 27-28 this year) we generally
take Sheridan Rd. in IL and Rte. 137 in WI, with some detours onto paved trails.
If you're willing to ride on crushed limestone you can ride on trails for 80% of the route
but it slows you down. ATA's Chicagoland map and the Milwaukee and Southeastern
Wisconsin Bike Map. both for sale at Boulevard Bikes, where I work, are very useful
for fiduring out your route. The book Biking from Chicago to Milwaukee on Bike Trails
gives a very detailed description of the off-street route with maps.

Coming back on Milwaukee 4.0, we took Rte 32/Sheridan Road to Kenosha. From Kenosha, I took Sheridan down to Russel Rd, and Russel west to the McClory Trail. I was on the McClory Trail and Green Bay Trail from Kenosha to Wilmette. You can hop onto Sheridan Road in Wilmette and continue on to Chicago Ave around the university. Chicago Ave becomes Clark at Howard St and will take you into the city.

Just get a look at my page on the Chainlink. If you've got a GPS it will guide you on trails most of the way down. Otherwise have a look at the KML file in Google Earth. I've never been on Route 32 - but this is generally the fastest way down and most frequently recommended on most maps. I've heard it's not a good idea during times with high traffic volumes.

Drivers were very courteous on Sunday afternoon when we were heading back south to Kenosha.
