I took my bike on the UP-NW line this morning, and was really impressed with the way our conductor handled bikes. On the platform where I got on, he organized our boarding in order of our destinations. He also politely instructed everyone to arrange the bikes head-tail. We had 9 bikes in my car, with none of them protruding into the aisle.
For those of us who are going to work or appointments - i.e., those who would really be inconvenienced by being told, "no more room for bikes", a conductor like this, who takes the initiative to help biking passengers, is really appreciated.

There are a few really good ones on the Rock Island too.
That's cool you had a good experience Jeff. If you haven't already, you should share this with Metra as well. You'll make that conductor's day if he hears he got positive feedback about something he did on the job, and that's the only way to make behavior like that the norm vs the exception.
I am sure the conductor will appreciate it. Not often do we hear about when we do good things. Usually just hear about the unsatisfied customers. Often it isn't our decision that creates the unhappy passenger either. (IE bans on bikes on certain weekends, or when and how many bikes are allowed, although the latter most of use "fuzzy math" and allow more on each car, as long as it is orderly.) Most of us are just ordinary people. Some of us are even avid cyclists.
Gasp...you've outted a good conductor. I hope his bosses or worse an anti-bike zealot doesn't use this against the poor guy....I am deep in the depths of pessimism these days.
