How extensive a rebuild did you want? If it's just replacing the bearings, there are pretty solid instructions on the crank brothers website and youtube plus the crankbrothers have a rebuild kit that provides all the bears, seals, caps, etc. that would get replaced. If you have the tools (a few hex wrenches), it's pretty simple.

I think perhaps he is seeking knowledge, skill, independence, camaraderie and pride of accomplishment. I don't know a bike shop where you can get that in exchange for the existing items he stated he was interested in trading.

Don't worry, there are plenty of folks out there that will pay for service on their bikes for you to make a living.

Please don't be offended if some folks actually see working on their bikes as part of the fun.

To that point, West Town or The Recyclery might be good options for a good place to learn, gain independence, camaraderie, etc. "Educational bike shop" is a good way to go.
