The Chainlink

Hello Mates,

I'm 55, so I guess it might be the start of arthritis,  but geez!  it's becoming a nuisance.   I stretch each day, including the neck and shoulders,   but even that causes the neck to  speak up .   On rides, it'll start buggin' me at the base of the neck and across the shoulders after an hour or so.    I'm doing a ride from the Mississippi to Marquette Park in a month,  so I'd love to hear any suggestions.    Thanks !

I got no suggestions to prevent it but all I got to say for the after effects is Tiger Balm!
Oh, and I saw someone recommend a chair massage. If you need a massage go see Ruby ant Michael Anthony on Belmont. She is awesome and my GF. I do promise though I am not talking it up just because she is my gf.

Proper fit does make a big difference. Several years ago, I took my road bike in for a fitting. After replacing handlebars and stem and making a slight adjustment to seat position, long distance ride comfort was MUCH better. If you want to do long distance touring, spending a few $$ on fit is very worthwhile.

Pat, I think you've added this link for all of us! I'm of the school of self medication but all the talk of proper fit is the key to less medication I think.
I just happened to look in my medicine cabinet and was reminded of a helpful treatment. You might want to try arnica cream. This is a homeopathic remedy that is good for strains, sprains, bruises, sore muscles and trauma.

The other night I managed to bash the back of one hand pretty badly while doing some physical work. I rubbed in arnica cream when I got home, then went to sleep. Bruising and pain was MUCH less than it would have been. I've accidentally bashed myself up like before and gotten nasty bruises. With the cream, bruising and swelling was minimal the next morning.

I also use it after a hard workout. Putting is on before a nap or overnight sleep lets it work while your body relaxes, and also seems to reduce the chance of waking up due to body pain. It is commonly available at health food stores.

What an incredibile community this is! Thanks to ALL who have been kind enough to offer tips. i've already incorporated some, and if need be, I'll get to that "btter fitted bike " option.
i really appreciate the response
Pat
Something else to consider would be the type of helmet you wear, if any. If it features a ratcheting size adjustment on the back make sure this is fitted properly and has sufficient padding.
