The Chainlink

We are thinking of moving and were considering the Logan Square area to buy a house.

What is everyones impressions of the area as far as livability? stores, security, transportation (bike-ability) etc..

Are there any sections of the neighborhood are better or worse than others? I am assuming around the actual square is good, but not in our price range.

Thanks

Is it me, or has Rosa caught an inordinate amount of shit for expressing her opinion? Maybe it was because she highlighted a map? We all have different perceptions of risk, danger, etc. I am frequently reminded by women friends that there is also a gender difference in risk perceptions. Rosa has had/does have family and/or friends living in the "zones of danger." Her opinions seem to be based on her personal experience and not just some snap judgment. Individual results and individual perceptions may vary. Sheesh! Give her a break.

Everything I know about crime-avoidance, I learned from watching National Geographic when I was a kid; i.e. never be the slowest or oldest antelope.
Yes. I read Gin's post.
Jeez, consider helpful advice on on this discussion derailed, but I'll attempt. I don't live in Logan Square, but have plenty of friends that do, spend quite a bit of time there and ride through/around often. It's a great area and wouldn't hesitate moving there.

I did however grow up/live in gang ridden areas and as a young turk and I found that to be quite a bummer. By bummer I mean getting jumped/shit beat out of me, trying to be roped into being 'initiated' and general harassment.
I don't know if on2wheels has or intends to have kids, but something to think about, especially with boys. I'm sure there's plenty of other folks out there that have grown up under similar circumstances, that would agree.

There is no harm in disclaimers, there is no harm in open advice. True, there is no harm in comments to the contrary, but can we please respect the request of the poster to keep it on subject.
I’ve been in Logan (on Palmer square) a couple of years and I love it. VERY bike-able (easy to hop on Milwaukee and shoot downtown, lots of other main streets that will get you places.) I walk my dog around by myself, late, and I have never had a problem and usually feel pretty safe. You definitely won’t want to wander certain areas though so I try to pay attention to where I’m going/what time it is/etc just in case because I know there are problems in that area.

A lot more bars and other establishments have popped up since I moved to the area (especially right by the square…new coffee place, a new bar, new salon, etc) so yeah that’s definitely contributing to the costs going up. My rent was pretty cheap but this coming year it’s going up $100/month…which is totally ridiculous, considering the quality of the place, but they just fixed up palmer park, redid the streets, painted some bike lanes, etc so I guess the value is going up (rent only increased by $20 last year as a comparison.) Plus there are 2 blue line stops that are easy to get to and not everything is super expensive – still good restaurants and bars.

In terms of security, I’m only 2 blocks from a police station but there have been 2 murders (gang related I believe?) right near me the past year and a half (one in the alley, one less than a block away) but like I said I’ve never felt that I was in danger or felt unsafe walking around at night. I don’t think I’ve ever been walking around outside and NOT seen at least a couple of cops drive by which is nice. I’m sure the houses up and down Palmer & Kedzie are outrageously expensive but I think if you lived right around there you would like it. Living close to Palmer Square would be great too especially if you like to run or have kids (they recently put in a walking/running track, and playground equipment.) I’m moving this weekend and will definitely miss living there!!

hahah and p.s. i agree with top red box of doom but the bottom one could shift a little more west.
Oh yeah--I love the new running/walking track around Palmer. And Miguel loves the "Bunny Park." I am sort of baffled by all the paint on Palmer though--wish they would have just gotten rid of a lane of asphalt/expanded the park.
