This has probably been mentioned before... but how do you lock your bike if left outside during whatever (working hours, going out, meeting friends, etc.)

Which of these two is locked better than the other? The green or the red?

The red bike wouldn't have wheels (or bag, for that matter...) after about a half hour in most city neighbourhoods.

That being said, i'm reluctant to leave my bike locked up outside all day if at all possible almost anywhere in the city, no matter how good a  lock were available.

If I was an evil bike thief I would pick apart the red bike. Wheel, bag 'n helmet.
I would hope that the red bike is a very short term lockup. But still - you're tempting fate.

Which wheel? Both are fair game if you ask me. 

As for the green one, I think if a thieve wants anything from it, they'd have to bring bolt cutters to cut the spokes of the front wheel... but then they'd be clueless on what to do with it, since it won't work right. 

I have been locking up outside in the Loop every weekday for years, and always do the same thing:  U-lock through the front tire and frame.  That's it. 

 

I leave it out there all day, sometimes as late a 1am. Never had a problem except for the theft of cheap, unbolted components.

 

My secret? Ride a nearly worthless bike. They can get any of us in seconds with a grinder, but there's no incentive to risk it on my bike.

I have also left my bike locked outside in the Loop all day without issue. I do use a cable to wrap around the second wheel, though.

Yep- the red one. Both wheels and that frame bag are easy pickin's.

+1 to Maurice's comment, re; riding an undesirable bike. Mine looks like hell and is pretty much worthless to anyone but the salvage man. I wouldn't let a "nice" bike out of my sight for a minute if I had one.

 

I agree... the undesirable bike I normally ride is in the basement with a loose crank, so I have to work on it this weekend. This locking setup will do for today.

As for the red bike, the bag is, I think, worth over $100. And yes, the wheels could be snatched any minute.

I want to tell the owner how to properly lock it, but I've never met him/her or seen them there locking it up. 

Actually just met the guy with the red bike as I was locking mine... seemed out of touch or high as a kite. Was confused how I locked mine and he said “oh! I see what you did there...” 

Your bike was better  locked but  with another Ulock or with a good cable such as a Kryptonite  cable you can  avoid the need to  remove the front  wheel. I leave my bike  outside with  a  U lock and  such a cable for  about 10 hours.  I had a bike stolen 13 years ago the  one time I foolishly used a light  and  cheesy cable with a a non U lock.The  cable was snipped and the bike was lifted. My fault and lesson  learned.

I did a better job today. Front wheel fully locked. The red one is still very questionable. 

I use U lock from Kryptonite and a decent chain lock.

I use a Tigr 24" lock around the frame and the quick-release wheel, and a Pinhead axle on the other wheel.  Each bike has one Pinhead wheel, front or back.  Spendy by my standards, with locks worth as much as my bikes, but effective for my needs and reasonably quick and versatile.  Also, I should be pretty set for a long time now.
