Apparently the Park District cannot find a way to deal with the snow on the ramp at Oak Street either. It is the worst spot on the trail from Oak St. to Montrose. I had to get off the bike to get up the ramp, too much snow and ice there for the last couple of days. Given all the dog walkers, runners and especially the tourists who use this park of the lakefront (yes the tourist still go out to the beach at Oak Street for a walk), you would think this ramp would get some attention. I was walking up the ramp, behind two cops this morning who made some comments that maybe the city would give them shovels to remove the snow. I responded that we wanted them to deal with the more important aspects of their jobs instead.
I avoid telling a police officers what I want them to do. I fear a stream of OC spray to my face.
I do this daily from Buena and Sheridan to State & Erie. You can either get off the lakefront trail at Belmont or Fullerton to the west side of Lake Shore Drive and meet up with State at North, or get off at North Avenue Beach underpass to State. You can also get off at Oak Street at the beach, but the traffic and sometimes people are a pain. The paths are almost always plowed and salted. A big snow causes problems everywhere, but the easiest is to cross over at North Avenue Beach underpass, although going up the east side on the way home takes a lot of effort on the steep and sometimes icy incline.
Hey thanks, Lee.
I salivate at the thought that maybe the proposed 45 - 50 million dollar Navy Pier flyover can be extended all the way to Oak Street to offer year 'round access along that section of the trail. Last I'd read, the project is scheduled to begin possibly this year and be completed by 2018.
People complain about the high cost and they have a point but we have a home boy at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and our new major has made a commitment to make Chicago the bike friendliest city in America. Let's hold their feet to the fire. A world class city deserves no less.

The Oak-Ohio stretch of the lakefront is obviously in need of major improvement, which hopefully will be a possibility as the city begins planning for rebuilding North Lake Shore Drive later this year. Sign up for Friends of the Lakefront Trail updates to stay up-to-date on that project: http://www.activetrans.org/lakefronttrail

Speaking of clearing snow, has anyone ever tried to have a group activity to shovel the Oak Street curve? Pile all the snow on the lake side to make a slope that will keep all the heavy swells from overflowing the cleared part of the trail?
If you're on Twitter, you can follow the #chiLFT hashtag, or if you're not, you can see the latest Twitter reports anyway through this website by Steven Vance called Lakefront Trail Conditions

Resurrecting an old thread; how IS the LFP these days with all the snow/ice/what-all we've had recently? Looking to go from Lawrence down to the Museum Campus next week, but there isn't much precip forecast for between now and then. Thanks!
