I was hoping Citi Bike would find a way to forgive the penalty because of what a great advocate he is for bike share. He described his favorite part of the day in New York, "was commuting to work via Citi Bike."

"Tanenhaus told New York Magazine that he didn't intend to get very far because Citi Bikes aren't really meant for long treks. However, by staying on flat ground and using paths called Rails-to-Trails—old tracks turned into biking and hiking trails—he said he was able to keep going."

He also had to a pay a $1,700 fine for not returning the bike.

I wonder if there is a GoFundMe or similar site where you can chip in a few bucks to defray some of his costs (especially the hefty Citi Bike penalty).
Couldn't he just buy the bike?
