Is Rahm an idiot?

Well it seems that Rahm has decided to close 3 police stations, District 19 Belmont, District 13 Wood, and District 21 Prairie.  Just wondering what is Rahm smoking?  Instead of hiring more police officers he is closing 3 police districts, WOW!  I can just imagine all the crime sky rocketing and with the G8/NATO summit coming in May, this city might just be run by the criminals!

Rahm is trying to close a huge budget gap but is not allowed to raise taxes. Therefore services must be cut.

 

If I were a cynic, I would speculate that when crime does rise, citizens will be more amenable to tax increases -- which are inevitable in any case. Security trumps ideology any day of the week.

 

A cynic might also argue that the city has been run by criminals for a very long time.

So basically the OP is an idiot that didn't read. One of the stations is less than a mile away from the south side police headquarters.

 

Sounds fine to me.

Before this mischaracterization of Rahm's (not yet announced) budget goes too far afield, why not read the Tribune article about it. Excerpt below:

Absent from the briefings was any discussion of cuts at the Chicago Police Department. Although the mayor has pledged to maintain the number of cops on the street, he has not ruled out merging of district police buildings or cutting layers of management.

 

My personal belief is that police officers reduce the incidence of crime, not their buildings.

Fewer stations with no layoff of officers means more police in the street and not sitting in the station.  Since there will be 3 fewer buildings the number of officers who worked at the buildings will be added to beat patrols.  

 

The FOP is complaining because a lot of those desk jobs are assigned by who you know, I'm glad the administration is standing up to the FOP.  Too many officers in this city are simply resentful of doing their jobs, and too many are using connections to receive cushy assignments.

I saw on the news where someone was questioning the response time because of the closing. The thing is, the Police don't sit at the station waiting for a call like a Pizza delivery driver...they are out patrolling the streets.

I am sure the FOP does many important things for The officers, but I also believe they are concerned about self preservation here.

they have been threatening to close 13 wood street for the last 12 years. It is the oldest police station still in use. 7 years ago they took away the lock up. The 13th district is one of the smallest police districts in  the city and could easily be absorbed by the 14. Im not all for getting rid of police stations , considering I live only blocks away from Wood st. station. Its just that this comes up every few years riles up the neighborhood, rich white people complain and then the idea is buried for a few years.
