How did I miss this news item last fall? I've got a job interview on Goose Island and was trying to figure out my commute options. I was discussing it with a friend, who mentioned that there is now legitimate bike and ped access from the north. Yeah!

Way to go, CDOT! This is a very welcome change.

Finkle has always been a resposnible & clean member of the industrial community and keeps their portion of Cotrland first rate. The junk on Cortland comes from the endless steam of junkers going to the recycling facilities ion Cortland or Kingsbury.
Yes, agreed, as indicated in my earlier post about the scrap yard. I guess there isnt much to be done about that. Those same 'junkers' are pulling stuff out of the dumpsters in my neighborhood too. I'm sure Finkl is more fanatical about being cleanly now more then ever as they are now owned by a German company.

I agree with Len. I've been riding past Finkl throughout the season for over 10 years. In that time, they've always kept their property nice.

The junkers are great at making a mess. As long as the scrap yards are around, there's likely to be debris.
I've ridden through Finkl quite a few times - it's pretty tidy for a heavy industrial area. The junk yards are plenty sloppy - I used to ride with some frequency and down Kingsbury just north of North - that's a very striking neighborhood. Unforunately the freight train tracks at near-parallel angles to the direction of travel are hell on your rims (and hands and knees, if you get caught). The tiny shards of metal, glass, fiberglass, wire, all mixed into the tarry-looking gravel were pretty rude to my tires as well.

Finkl I especially appreciate for the scenery. If I'm not in a hurry, and the big roll-up door on the north side of Cortland is open and there's something fiery going on there, it's great to stop and watch for a few minutes.

Yesterday I got a chance to check out the improved bridge to Goose Island on the way to/from my job interview. First rate improvements to that bridge!

I saw other peds and one cyclist using the bridge. There's a nice new sidewalk from the south end of the bridge, running along the river. While I was walking there, I noticed some heavily wrapped trees like this one.

Then I saw this sign of wildlife.

Didn't realize we had beavers around Goose Island. Mother Nature is certainly making a comeback there.
Cool photo of the beaver-gnawed tree!

Been beavers on the north branch of theriver for at least 10 yrs. Before our company moved to goose island we had some river front on kingsbury and the beavers took down quite a few trees. The city had to relocate some because of the damage they did.
Cool! glad to hear it. But can someone provide a link to the entrance? I'm having a hard time visualizing where this is.
Ning doesn't like imbedding google maps code, but click the link. Obviously North Ave is no longer under construction, but this is the area.

Ah, I get it now, and easy access to Hooker Street ;-)

From the department of redundancy department. Excellent pun, sir.

I work on Hooker and the bridge while an acess to goose island is not necesarilly easy to hooker. Lots of RR tracks intersecting at weird angles plus the traffic on division. I enter on Cherry (where the bridge exits) and keep on cherry (rt fork) to Division. 4 way stop here, makes crossing easier. from there you can go up Division (left) to Hooker or keep on Cherry to North Branch ( go to Halstead or turn left on Haines to Hooker.
