That's something that happened to me way too many times when I commuted to/from Rogers Park.

Since I tend to commute on "cycling superhighways", I forget that most of the city is probably not inundated with cyclists. But we can all agree, I am sure, that getting caught behind a garbage truck while riding one's bike is one of the nastiest experiences one can have.
I saw a surprisingly high number on my ride in this morning between 5-6am. I usually hardly see anyone. The ninjas, shoalers, and salmon were out in force however.
Back to school week!!

Craziness this morning-- like everyone was out on the road at once.... but only one bike spotted.
That explains it! I was surprised at how many were there on my route

Where have all the cyclists gone? It was really sparse on the LFP commuter highway this morning. I think there were only about 6 or 7 people who passed me between Addison and Monroe, and I am usually passed by at least 15 or 20! And, no, I did not suddenly become Marianne Vos!
I don't know when you typically are out, Lisa, but the cyclists you saw - did more of them have lights on than when it's nice? That's what I noticed - fewer cyclists, and more of them with their lights on and packs on their backs. My people, I feel like.
As far as I can tell, the racers really clear out when it gets into the lower fifties. I don't mind that at all, since they're also frequently most of the ninjas I see in the early morning hours. I saw a training line on the LFP yesterday evening (54 degrees or so) and it really surprised me.
I'm excited to see how many people keep at it as the winter approaches. With as many people as have been out this season, I wonder if a few more people will figure, "Heck, I'll give winter commuting a try this year."

I only saw a few other people riding during my Divvy ride through the Loop earlier.
It's supposed to rain all afternoon. Already started in the Loop.
That might be a bigger factor than the temp, which is still comfortable for cycling IMO.
I am out there roughly between 7:30 and 8:00. I would say that most people had at least rear flashers on. Did not pay attention to backpacks vs. panniers. I put both my lights on. :-) It was misting/drizzling/raining on and off for my entire ride.

Maybe one.
