The Chainlink

Hello cyclists!

Besides the obvious of just countingr or checking your routes via google maps, how do you keep track of your bike miles? I'm curious if a fitbit or something similar might be a good investment for this purpose. GPS on my phone typically kills the battery and is not always terribly accurate for tracking miles.

The whole point is that the reason many record milage is in attempt to "shame others" by bragging about their mileage. It's not shameful if you want to record your mileage but the reason why could be.

In any case what you use should always be based on why you use it; otherwise it's just another arbitrary data point.

So what I use: nothing. Why? I have no value for that data; chiefly because there is no easy correlation with any other effective data that would support my purpose in riding.

OP was asking what we use to track, not why we track.

If you don't do it for your own reasons, keep it to yourself, or open a separate thread. No need to be shaming others that want to do.

I'd like to bring this discussion back to the root - "How do you track your bike miles?" There's no shame in tracking, no shame in not tracking. I don't think I know anyone, racing or otherwise that uses their numbers to "shame" others so I will respectfully disagree on that point. I think for the sake of this discussion, it's really not a discussion about should I track or shouldn't I but rather, what I use to track my miles?

My answer - I just got a Garmin 1000 because it has GPS as well as cadence, HRT, speed, etc. I am hoping to eventually get a power meter too. I'd really like to do touring and bike camping so this seemed like the best choice for what I want to do. It was a Christmas/Birthday present and it's a huge upgrade from my old Garmin.

What old Garmin did you use? Is it for sale?

I have one of the old triathlete watches. I'm going to keep it for the rare times that I attempt to run. :-)
