Find a journalist and send them along the C&O Canal from Cumberland to Washington. It's a good history story if you package it right. It's 185 miles, but there are plenty of towns and B&Bs along the way. While it was built a bit late and was beaten by the railroad by about eight years it was the main supply route to Washington DC during the Civil War since the railroad strayed over the Potomac into Virginia and some points and was hit by Confederate raids while the canal stayed on the Maryland side.

I could also suggest the Great Allegheny Passage which goes from Pittsburgh to Cumberland. It goes through a lot of what used to be industrial heartland along the Monongahela and the rural area following the Youghagehney to Connellsville (an early source of Coke for Pittsburgh steel mills), then following the Western Maryland across the eastern Continental Divide on part of Jay Gould's attempt to create a coast to coast rail network. If you do this one have your writer contact the Western Maryland and P&LE historical societies to make sure the facts are good.
