Has anyone gone with Heritage Bicycles for powder coating?

Currently I'm working on a build to get an 86' Trek back into shape as a proper road bike. I'm trying to do this on the cheap, so Heritage's $100 frame/fork powder coat is looking pretty attractive. Has anyone used their powder coating services and could speak to the quality?

Thanks!!

If you  have something specific you need to mask you might want to do the prep work. We sand blast the entire frame and fork before we apply the powder coat. Any special decals will be blasted but we try and keep the headbadge.

You can also have us disassemble and reassemble the bike for you for an extra $80, the cost of a tune up (which may or may not be good depending on who you ask).

What's included in the $100? Does that include any of the prep work like masking threads and striping old paint, or do you hand them a bare metal frame ready to do down the paint line?

I find it interesting that Heritage is posting here in response to the powder coat question but not addressing somebody making some pretty legit complaints about the service as far as bike maintenance goes.

While it is entirely possible for a dying wheel to drop a bunch of spokes after a spoke replacement it is something that a shop should usually be able to catch.  Properly seating a tire is part of changing a tire; if they let a tire go out not properly seated that is a pretty serious problem as well.

I don't think a shop has to handle a dissatisfied customer in public, especially in a thread hijack..  There's no winning in that kind of situation.

Whenever I get my rack from CETMA, which might be never apparently, I plan on taking it here and getting it powder coated a light grey to match my Surly Rear Rack. Whenever this gets done I will post the results.

Good luck with ever seeing a rack from them...

hijack over... thank goodness

hmm, I though I had my painter picked out now Heritage shows up on the seen.

Yeah, Heritage seems the cheapest and was the most responsive to my inquiries. It took me literally weeks to get a response from some of the smaller, bike specific, powdercoaters. Some never bothered to respond at all.

As far as their quality goes, maybe the easiest would be to stop by there and "inspect" some of the Heritage bikes yourself? They use the same powder coater for their own bikes, AFAIK.

some text from the CETMA site:

About

Cargo bikes and racks built by one guy in a small shop next to the beach. Venice, California.

Even with all those red flags ("next to the beach", "Venice" and "California") I want me one!

I wonder though, will the color from powder-coating a rack hold up? My racks get worn pretty deeply in some spots - esp where my pannier(s) touch them... does anyone have any experience with a powder coated rack?

Wikipedia has an answer for your question.  The TL;DR version:

Reichs-Ausschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung (Imperial Commission for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance)  invented the collection of colors and called it RAL840 (probably for the first three initials of their name).

If you're limited to RAL colors, you still have a boatload of choices!

Nerd question:  What does RAL stand for?

Duane,

Powdercoating does not present an impediment to using decals. Obviously,  (the generic) you can simply apply your decals on top of the color coat, but you can also have a clear powder coat applied on top of the decals after they are applied.

This is not thread hijack, but I would like to point out that powdercoating is NOT painting. Powdercoat is a dry powder coating that is sprayed on and then baked in an oven at 400 degrees or so, making it flow out and harden. It is extremely durable and will endure far more abuse than wet paint will.

Paint isn't nearly as durable, but has it's positives; more color choices, capable of using decals (even vintage waterslide decals), and arguably a nicer finish. Notice I used the term "arguably". I've seen some sweet powder jobs, and I've seen some miserable ones.

Tony, I'd say a powder coated rack will hold up better than a painted one, no doubt.

I have used Urban Powdercoating several times and am satisified with them. The price is similar and on the north side.

If you want to see any of the work thay have done for me just ask. They have done 5 for me last year and have one right now as well.

I realize this is a way delay on your thread/question, but: did you end up going through with the coat from Heritage? I'm considering it--$100 is also attractive to me--but can't seem to find a lot of reviews of their work.
