GPS apps on mobile phone

Last year, on an organized long ride, I had a GPS with the route loaded onto it (I guess in the form of waypoints)

 

Does anyone know of Android based apps that can do the same?

-          Import a previously developed route from Google Maps/Earth or the like

-          Ability to display the rout and my position compared to the route?

I am not really interested in turn-by turn directions or similar functionality that Google Maps provides on an Android.

I looked aroung Google Play, but could not figure out if any such app exists

Thanks for that link. It only appears to cover a 10-mile radius? can I cache multiple maps for off line use?

No experience with any of these but they both work with gpx files:

I've done that with MassUp.us for years.  On almost every Critical Mass for example.  That's how I accomplished things like the heart shaped ride.  Didn't you see it in action on the perimeter ride?  Since it's mainly made for followers, loading a route (from an external KML) is currently only an admin function, but I could set you up.  I know I know, everyone's baffled by the interface, but a smart guy like you ought to be able to make it through reading the instructions.

I use MapMyRide.

I don't know about importing routes from Google Maps, but I like creating my maps from their site better.

I also use the map that I created to follow onscreen during rides

I signed up and downloaded the app and tried to create some routes on my PC. It appears to be doing what I need, in regards to displaying the route on my smartphone. I'll have to play with it some more.

It doesn't play nice with Firefox (and ghostery + adblock plus), and it appears to ignore bike paths in calculating routes, requiring me to add many intermediate waypoints.

I was out in the woods of southern Missouri last weekend and was recommended to try an app called Nav Free that required you to download state maps but did a good job with all the small unlisted fire and logging roads we were using.  I more or less know my way around but it was handy when trying to find alternate routes.  I don't really trust the navigation as much as a map and the 'you are here' identifier, which can work with GPS even when your phone's not in range of any tower (which was basically all the time down there).

I've been playing with MapMyRide (MMR) and RideWithGPS (RWG). I haven't really used either one on a ride, but RWG seems to have an edge so far.

  • MMR requires a membership to print a cue sheet, RWG allows that in the free version
  • RWG processes uploaded GPX files correctly. MMR garbles the data. (I used a Great Lakes Rando GPX file as an example)
  • RWG takes better advantage of trails, whereas MMR appeared to avoid them.

Here's hoping that the weather will improve soon, so I can do more riding than just commuting.
