A friend from Rockford called me, this morning, after seeing 3 "ghost bikes" on his way to work and was distressed that he wasn't aware of the recent cyclist deaths there.

I did a quick web search and found what it is about- a Chicago artist "conceived" a fake memorial art installation- about a dozen "ghost bikes" installed around Rockford....  smh (don't hate Rockford, hate the decision-makers)

Has this been brought up here yet?

I was in the area on Monday and  there was a story in one of the local papers on the project. http://www.rrstar.com/article/20141005/News/141009641

I remember having conflicting feelings. I felt its great to raise awareness and the poetic license of art may allow interesting twists on the message. On the other hand I felt it diminishes the impact of real ghost bikes to have a set of fake ones around town. I still feel unresolved. I get to Rockford a lot and will likely search out the ghost bikes to see what was done.

I think that is in pretty poor taste considering that there are real ghost bikes all over the place that actually represent a human life lost.

I hear you. I am interested to know what the artist was thinking. He had to have thought of this.
