Does anyone know where I can get decent racks for events?

Hey everyone,

I am trying to find places that I can either rent or purchase moveable bike racks for events like the Andersonville farmers market and Midsommarfest.  I have looked at the Dero event racks already but I would love to find something local to Chicago.  Another thought I had was to use Tri Racks, but they may not be as durable and they are not as secure.  Any thoughts or recommendations?

Contact Active Transportation Alliance.  They should be able to help you out.

Get in touch with Activetrans.org I think they rent out the bike racks that they have.Workingbikes.org has some also, don't know if they rent racks

I'll have our sponsorship guru and queen of the bike swap, Katie Leisner, respond soon!

Hey all, Katie here.

Brian, Active Trans went through this process a few years ago when we bought new bike racks for our Bike Valet program.  We ended up purchasing triathlon-style racks because they are reasonably priced, easy to move and store well.  We have about 60 of them in a small corner of our storage area.

As you point out, though, they are not secure (it is impossible to lock to them).  Active Trans uses our racks for our Bike Valet program (http://www.activetrans.org/consulting/bike-valet), and we have someone watching the bikes all the time anyhow, so it works for us.

If you are interested, we actually rent out our racks during the times when we don’t have Bike Valet contracts – or if you have a little budget and want to save some time, I’d be happy to put together a quote to hire our Bike Valet.  If you want to chat about it, my email is linked to Bike Valet page above.

United Rentals.  They are a national company and their Chicago location is at 3233 W 36th St.  You can reach them at 773-733-4684.

Also an ideal place to go if you happen to need forklifts, cherry pickers, giant outdoor festival crash-gates or scaffolding for your insane PA speaker setup.

Hi Katie,

Thanks for getting back to me, this is great information.  I would love to get a quote for the bike valet if you have one.  I want to do something for Midsommarfest here in Andersonville; June 8th-10th.  I am not entirely sure if there will be a budget for anything like this but it definitely cannot hurt to research.  I have a little grant money that I was thinking of possibly using for more permanent event racks from Dero.  That way I could use them for our farmers market and other events throughout the year, so I am waiting to get some quotes form Dero.  If you would like to get in touch with me directly, my email is bbonanno@andersonville.org or phone 773 728 7552.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks everyone for all of the great tips.  I definitely have a lot of leads to follow up on so that is awesome.  I will keep you posted on what we end up doing.

Thanks Lee,

I will definitely give them a call.
