Could cyclists swing the next Chicago mayoral election?

In the current excitement and trepidation about the next mayor of Chicago where do cyclists come in? Considering that support for any one person said to be running is pretty fractured could cyclists fill the void a given mayor to be would need by demanding modern mass transit and cycling infrastructure growth in the city in return?

Re a forum--I bet there are many groups that would partner with Active Trans to make it happen.

Making candidates aware of ped, cycling AND transit issues is more important than focusing on just one aspect, because so many of us use two or three of these modes of transportation in combination in the course of an average day or week.

If you're interested and haven't yet heard about it, Walk Bike Transit is aiming to put walking, cycling and transit issues on the radar of mayoral and aldermanic candidates.  There's a newly formed group on the Chainlink, in addition to the web site linked above.

So far, Miguel del Valle is the only mayoral candidate who is including anything about sustainable transportation in the issues statement on his web site. 

 

Since Rahm Emanuel has consistently been so far ahead in the polls, we really need to make a strong grassroots effort to put sustainable transportation (cycling, walking AND public transit) on his radar.  Here's the contact link to submit ideas.

Channel 11 (WTTW) has just launched a blog to cover the mayoral race.  It includes links for each candidate's web site, as well as Facebook, Twitter, media coverage and campaign disclosures.  If you want to send questions or ideas to candidates, this site offers you a starting point.

 

Early and Often is covering mayoral and aldermanic races.
