Cold Snap

How's everyone surviving the cold snap with windchill below zero? Keeping warm? Toughing it out like a polar bear? Staying home? Going to work via CTA?

Still riding. Just have to remember to slow down at slippery spots. I almost wiped out this morning making what normally would be a routine U-turn.

 

Getting by with the old beard/scarf combo instead of a balaclava/facemask, which fogs up my glasses.

Rode again this morning (on Divvy, as yesterday). Felt less cold than on Thursday? Roads were pretty good considering the additional evening precipitation.

Yeah, even though it was 5 degrees this morning, it felt much better than the past two days. Light winds.

Rode this morning in the negative-six-degree weather. Holy cow was that cold!

I wussed out yesterday. With a wind chill of 20 below, I thought it was best to take the bus/train.

This morning's temperature was 11 degrees, with a wind chill of -1, so I hopped on the Divvy. 'Not too bad expect that the Divvy bikes have so little air in the tires it feels like you're on a workout bike.

I traveled over the holiday to ski country in Tahoe. I took advantage of the great ski shops out there and picked up a new ski helmet / goggle combo that works together seamlessly. I tried it out this morning on my commute and found it worked much better than my bike helmet and non-matching goggle setup. 

I missed all the super cold days, so I kinda hope it drops again below zero to test this setup.

Is it a bucket helmet? Does a full bucket provide any advantage over a standard helmet?

I guess you could call it a bucket helmet. It is a solid shell, and the vents are operable to tune the amount of air let it.

Also, I assume it has ear covers? If so, do you still wear a helmet liner with it, or is the helmet warm enough to go without the liner?

It does have ear covers that have some amount of insulation. I did wear my thin fleece balaclava that I typically wear and was pretty comfortable.
