The Chainlink

Hey all--

I know you can take your bike on the Van Galder bus to Madison, and I'd like to try it this weekend. Anyone have any experience with this? Did you feel your bike was secure and not just thrown in with the cargo below? Do I need to bring anything to put the bike on, like bungee cords?

Thanks!

I've used it a few times from Madison back to Chicago with no problem. Have cash ready for them. From downtown Chicago they use a double-decker bus that has limited space for bikes compared to the big compartments under the single deckers. 2-3 bikes should fit, though.

Awesome, thanks!

I've done it a few times - never concerned about the bike banging around in cargo, don't think there's any way to secure it in there. A bigger concern is that one time I had to wait for the next bus as cargo compartment was full - that was a holiday weekend (4th of July a year or two back) so I guess that made some sense. Fortunately the bus runs every hour through the late afternoon/early evening and I only lost an hour's time - but something to be aware of. Also I've only had the driver collect bike fee once, but you should have cash to pay it. Have fun!

Awesome, thanks! I'm going to leave from ORD at an off peak time, so hopefully I don't run into this issue.

I'll have cash on hand. Thanks for the heads up.
