Bike Path Will Link Edgewater to Joliet, and Nearly All of It Is Off-Road

By next year, you'll be able to bike from Edgewater to Joliet — and nearly all of it off-road.

The Lakefront Trail now stretches about 18 miles from Hollywood Avenue and Lake Shore Drive on the north lakefront through Downtown and down to the South Shore Cultural Center. An approximately 6-mile trail of on-street bike lanes along U.S. 41 ends at the Burnham Greenway Trail at Wolf Lake in Hegewisch on the Southeast Side.

But plans next year call for the Burnham Greenway Trail to be extended into south suburban Burnham. There, the paved, off-road trail will link into a 74-mile path through the south and southwest suburbs that now runs approximately from Calumet City to the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Darien.

There is about a mile of road riding required between the Old Plank trail and the Glacial trail.

The Glacial trail connects you directly to the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie about 10 miles south of Joliet. Makes for a wonderful, if ambitious day trip. http://app.strava.com/activities/57602283

Way cool. I've ridden along the North Branch trail a few times but getting to Caldwell and Devon is a daunting experience if you're coming from the east, at least. Having a path connected to the Lakefront trail is something I'm really looking forward to. I'm also excited about the Lakefront flyover. I don't know when it will be completed, but they're done with the foundation work.

We are a force to be reckoned with!

Where from the east are you coming from?  I find the ride from Lincoln Square to Caldwell/Devon to be a quite pleasant zig zag mostly through low trafficked residential streets.  I take Byrn Mawr west and then follow the bike route signs from the city through Forest Glen/Sauganash.
