Anyone have bike insurance? What company did you go with? Can you give some deets and a link? Have a friend researching it right now and would love some insight. If you have bike insurance, how has your experience been? Any recommendations for those looking for a provider? Thanks!!

What kind of coverage are you asking about? Theft? I ask cuz this comes up once in a while in other forums and the prevailing wisdom is something to the effect of:

Don't insure stuff you can afford to replace.

If your bike gets stolen once every five years, and you've paid $1200 over those five years to insure it, you'd be better off saving your money and just paying for a new bike when it gets stolen. (I have no idea what it might cost- I'm totally guessing.)

I guess "bike insurance" can be a rather large umbrella (does it cover racing, riding accidents with no vehicle involved, etc?), but auto insurance (UM and UIM coverage) can often cover cyclists who are hit by an uninsured or underinsured motorist while riding (as always, best to talk to your insurance agent about it to make sure).

I'm not familiar enough with all the in and outs of bike insurance (and I think the policies do very a lot) to know whether you get a huge advantage over just taking out an auto policy, but if you do already have auto (or drive at all where auto would be helpful) it's probably a factor to consider in terms of whether bike insurance is worth it.

If it's just to cover the theft value of bikes, I'd have the same question whether you're already adequately covered by renters or homeowners (either of which ppl should really already have anyway).  Some renters policies also let you add a bicycle rider if you have some truly high value bikes.

Looking for people that have and know about bike insurance to hear their experiences. Here's an example:

Whether at your home, on your auto, riding the trail or the road, bicycles are rarely covered for theft or damage. Velosurance offers the availability of a multi-risk, stand-alone insurance policy allowing cyclists to insure their bikes for theft, physical loss, damage, and liability.

I think theft and to a degree crash is covered in some home/renter's insurance.
