Bike as luggage or package from La Crosse to Madison or Chicago

Help me. My friend is biking to La Crosse and says that Greyhound is a full of pinheads who think that a bike is a terrible and dangerous thing which must be disassembled and contained in a very small cardboard box. The official regulations say "...canvas or other substantial material and securely fastened...." is acceptable under 62 inches long.

Why can't he just take the wheels off, plastic cling wrap it and put it in his camping tarp with some rope and perhaps some duck tape?

Riding? Several trails in the general direction.

Travel? Amtrak between La Crosse and Chicago. Both handle checked luggage, Madison doesn't. Rt. 28, leaves about 10:45 AM. See www.amtrak.com

Amtrak also requires packing the bike. The box is long and narrow. All that's required is to rotate the handlebars and take off the spokes.

My limited experience on Greyhound: the box is shorter and fatter. One or both wheels may also need to be removed.
Thanks Bob! You're a life-saver. Do you want to tag along?
Bob, I believe you mean it's required to take off the pedals, not disassemble the wheels.

Not sure how La Crosse to Chicago is, but when we headed back from Milwaukee, we couldn't get my pedals off. We just took off my front wheel and seatpost, rotated the bars, and stuffed the damn thing in their overpriced box. It was a bit bulged, but they took it (in Amtrak's $15 box. Bastards.)

Also, concerning the box, to save money, call some La Crosse bike shops beforehand to see if they'll give you a box.
