The Chainlink

Big bike weekend! Who's joining us at the Chicago Cycle Swap on Saturday??

It's a big weekend for bicyclists with the Bicycle Film Festival starting Thursday, the West Town Bikes Winter Meltdown Friday and the Chicago Cycle Swap on Saturday.

Stay safe out there while having fun, Chainlinkers. Don't forgot your $5 off coupon for the Swap.

Keep the rubber side down,

Ethan, with Active Trans

PS: we're still looking for some volunteers for the Swap, you can get in free by offering your services.

See you there on Saturday!
I'll be at the Meltdown and the swap. Cannot wait!
I will definitely be attending. I am curious, are there going to be any presentations/events that kids can partake in or may enjoy watching/listening to (7-8 year olds)? I know it is a swap meet, but thought maybe there was a kiddie section or presentation, otherwise my visit at the swap meet may be a very short one depending on the patience factor of said kiddie.

Definitely! We'll have a cool demo area in addition to the presentations...the full list is here.

The demo area will allow attendees to try out bike trailers, cargo bikes, adaptive cycles and Dutch bikes.

And here's two presentations that may be a good fit for your little ones:

12:30 p.m.
The Racketeers
Performers: Andrea Bolks, Karlene Hanko, Katie Paffhouse, Kellie Walters, Laura Oliver, Monica Mejia, Shar Finley
Special Guest: Cameron Puetz
Description: The Racketeers are an all-girl bike collective experimenting with BMX bikes and dance. Exploring the world of choreography, music, bikes, tires, wheels, and tricks with endless possibilities.

1:15 p.m.
Living Car Free (and Car Light) with Children
Presenter: Local parents experienced with transporting children of a variety of ages, along the continuum of being totally car free to having cars, but not using them for all trips.
Description: Having kids does not mean you have to trade your bike in for a car. Local families share tips on raising transvelopedes, ie children who know how to get around by transit, biking and walking. Tricky issues such as keeping your cool while having to layer both you and your child for winter excursions will be addressed.

Thanks,

Ethan, with Active Trans

The Racketeers sound like a lot of fun to watch- I am sure the little one will get a kick out of watching cycling and dance. Sounds like fun- will make sure to arrive around noon then. See everyone there!

I think there is a bike ride on Friday night at 6:00 at Daley plaza. CCM

This is a great reminder to think about including programming/content aimed -specifically- at kids, thanks!

In addition to the presentations Ethan identified, Hal Honeyman's ought to be of interest to families and kids as well as his work primarily involves adapting cycles so kids can enjoy them, and he'll have a number  of examples on hand to try out:

Time: 3:30 P.M.
Topic:  Freedom and Mobility through Adaptive Cycling
Presenter: Hal Honeyman
Description: Hal Honeyman of The Bike Rack/ Creative Mobility presents equipment and anecdotes from his years of experience helping children and adults with disabilities enjoy the pursuit of cycling. Adaptive cycling provides people with disabilities a form of recreation, physical fitness and independent mobility. Hal will also help participants is assessing the type of bikes needed for each rider and some of the modifications that are available, as well as demonstrate the Versatrike.

Last year's swap (around 500 total in attendance) topped out at over 100 positive RSVPs on the chainlink listing.

Can we top it?

Will there be Wi-fi? I only ask as a vendor - our point of sales system is internet based...
