How tragic.  Yet another biker dies, in this case on a route I take most days.

I want to express extend to Robert's friends and family.  Anybody here know him?

I wonder exactly where it happened and how the two collided. The road is pretty wide there I believe...

From the Trib:

A 26-year-old man died Wednesday night after he was hit by a car traveling in the same direction, police said.

Robert Cann, of the 3200 block of North Southport Avenue, was pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m.

He had been traveling south on Clybourn Avenue north of Division Street and was hit by a southbound car about 6:45 p.m., police said.

Sad news. Thanks for posting this, jo.

It happened directly in front of Yojimbo's Garage. DNA Info had a photo from the scene that I don't want to post here.

Condolences to his family and friends.

I was not biking yesterday, but I often take Clybourn home around that time or later. It's generally a pretty mellow street.

very sad. I express my sympathies too.

I was cycling home last evening (went up the lakefront a bit then through lakeview back to my 'hood)

at that exact time and maybe it was just me; but the (car) drivers seemed really worked up and

anxious (more than usual ?) around that time. maybe it was the upcoming blackhawks game ?

so sad and sorry to read about another fatality...

His name is Bobby Cann. He was my best friend. He was such an advocate for cycling and safety. I met him years ago while working at REI. I want to have tomorrow's Mass in his honor. Any ideas/help?

Phil, so sorry to hear this.  I wish peace to Bobby's family and  friends. This is chilling because all riders are at risk.  We can't just say,"I ride safely, I'm ok."  It happens, and it can happen to any one of us.

The pictures on DNA Info make it look like it was a vehicular accident as well, was the cyclist just collateral damage?

Dan, yeah, drivers seemed worked up yesterday when I was going home around 5:30. Lot's of (verbally) aggressive motorists on Lincoln. I think it's just that time of year, it's hot, traffic is heavy, and as a non biking friend said to me this weekend, "I hate it when I'm sitting in traffic and I see cyclists whizzing past me. It isn't fair." That's a pretty stupid way to look at it, but I think that feeling is prevalent.

Philip, sorry to hear about Bobby's death. I wish this would stop happening.

Philip, as David said, condolences and a wish for peace for you and all of Bobby's friends and family.  It is a heartbreaking loss.

So sad. His last post on fb was sharing ride of silence info from the event on may 9th.

Agree.

Philip - I'm so, so sorry for your loss :(

So sorry to hear this.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends

Life is really precious- truly heartbreaking

From what I can see from the pic it looks like just one car was involved.  And it's position along with the fact that both were traveling in the same direction indicates excessive speed, perhaps Cann took the lane to safely pass the two parked cars on the west side of the street, pictured there.

But I shouldn't speculate.

Philip, sincere condolences on your loss.  This is heartbreaking and very sobering.  I ride that street quite often and witness a lot of piggishly entitled speeding and careless driving.
