Update: Cyclist Jimmy Lispier, Hit-and-Run Fatality 8-23-18 in W. Humboldt Pk.

News Corner Report:

Jimmy Lispier, 42, will be announced as the fifth on-street cycling fatality in Chicago for 2018 authorities have revealed.

The Police major accidents division is still investigating this incident. Because of the fact that a bicycle was found at the scene, this could possibly be considered as a cycling fatality.

"A man was killed in a hit-and-run early Thursday morning 8-23-18 in West Humboldt Park. The 42 year old was found unresponsive laying in the middle of the street at 3:17 a.m. And undamaged bicycle was also found on the scene, police said."

The Cook County Medical Examiner has not confirmed the death.

Will update.

News Corner note: This incident was reported here just hours after it occurred. Concern was due to the fact that a bicycle was found 'undamaged' nearby and police and authorities were reticent about classifying it as a cycling fatality. From pressure and the effective reporting of ABC7Chicago's Evelyn Holmes who found a late night bystander who saw him riding his bicycle that night, the incident was deemed to be recognized as a cycling fatality and not a pedestrian fatality.

Thank you Evelyn Holmes for your effective reporting! Facts first!

"A man was killed in a hit-and-run incident early Thursday morning in the west Humboldt Park neighborhood on the west side. Jimmy Lispier, 42, was found unresponsive lying in the middle of the street at 3:17 a.m. in The 4400 block of West Division, according to the Chicago Police, and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Lispier was pronounced dead at the scene. An undamaged bicycle was also found near him."

A woman bystander who was on her way to the laundromat at the time said that she had seen the victim on his bicycle traveling down Division but did not witness the hit-and-run according to the ABC7Chicago news report by Evelyn Holmes.

It is yet to be determined by authorities and CDOT on whether this incident will be considered as an on-street cycling fatality or a pedestrian fatality because of the fact that there are no witnesses and or video surveillance footage. Given the past history of CDOT's record of not  including certain cycling fatalities in the yearly statistics, it is possible that this fatality could be treated similarly.

Thanks for your attentiveness in posting these items, Tom.  This is a puzzling one.  Is it possible that he was walking his bike when he was hit?  Is it possible that he had some kind of medical condition and wasn't actually hit?

If I were walking my bike in the early Thursday AM I would be walking it on those nice wide Division Street sidewalks. As a matter of fact I was out night training riding last night up till 4AM on one of my recent times since I've been injured (lower-body) in a spill. I'm almost 100% certain this guy was cycling. One problem with cycling in the street at night is the intoxicated (under the influence) driver coming up fast from behind. You have to stay off 'wide speedways' at night.

Updated info by the Chicago Sun-Times 3:15pm, 8-24-18.

"Tire marks at the scene led investigators to determine Lispier died in a hit-and-run crash, police said. The Medical Examiner's office did not immediately rule on the cause or manner of Lispier's death following an autopsy Friday pending further investigation."

I spoke with Lispier's daughter the other day. She said photo included in this post, which also ran in a local news report, isn't him.

Photo deleted. Thank you John.
