Description

This is an exciting time for fans of walking, biking and transit in Chicago. Although the city government has historically put most of its efforts into making it easier to drive, under the new administration we’re seeing a new focus on making it safe, convenient and fun to get around town by sustainable modes.

Mayor Emanuel and transportation commissioner Gabe Klein have promised to create over 100 miles of protected bike lanes, a large-scale bike share system and the Bloomingdale Trail elevated greenway, all within the first term. The city is also building bus rapid transit corridors, and improving pedestrian safety with better crosswalks and walk signals, and new initiatives get announced almost every week.

Steven Vance and John Greenfield, co-founders of the daily transportation blog GridChicago.com, will outline and critique the city’s efforts and lead a discussion about what else should be done to make Chicago a world-class transportation town.
