Description

Ride of Silence - May 16, 2012 - One day. One time. World wide.

(always the 3rd Wednesday of May):

On one night in cities around the world, cyclists gather annually to ride in silence to raise awareness of cyclists' right to ride on the road and to honor the fallen cyclists no longer with us. We ride in hope to end the tragedy on our roads. Chicago's Ride of Silence will ride in silent procession past several Chicago Ghost Bikes.

The 12-mile route is set to pass the sites of crash victims marked by Ghost Bikes, which are powerful memorials to fallen cyclists created by painting a bicycle white and placing it at or near the site of the cyclist’s death.

Gather at 6pm, Depart at 7pm
Eternal Flame in Daley Plaza

Website: http://www.rideofsilence.org/chicago/

A post-ride gathering will be held at the small gym in the Hamlin Park Field House.

If anyone wants to join in a pre-ride, I will be leaving Roscoe Village around 5:15-5:30ish. We could meet at Roscoe Village Bikes. This is the route I am planning on taking: Damen to Clybourn to Larrabee to Oak to Kingsbury to Kinzie to State to Randolph.  Map: http://g.co/maps/wvgbu

Let's not forget tonight's record breaking world Tweet-Up event for Ride of Silence!

The global Ride of Silence Tweet-up:  We are asking organizers and as many of their participants as possible to Tweet a message at the start of your event.  Your tweet should include your event’s city, state and the hashtags #rideofsilence and #checkin.  We’re hoping this global tweet-up will raise further awareness through the media IF it’s big enough; we might just break a world record since we normally get over 20,000 participants at our events worldwide. (According to the Guinness World Book of Records, the most attendees at a ‘Tweetup’ is 1,935 and was achieved by Ndamukong Suh (USA) at the Hawks Championship Center, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, on 16 April 2011.)

Getting to Daley Plaza by 6pm? Please help get folks checked in? Greet riders as they come in and have them sign in and get a flier.

TWEET-UP ANNOUNCEMENT:

Calling all participants with a smartphone and twitter account, Let's tweet at the start of our ride:
"#Chicago #rideofsilence #checkin"
All is needed is a very short tweet "#rideofsilence #checkin" to complete a check-in for our Tweet-Up -- any extra text is super. If a GeoLocation isn't included in the tweet, I may need to track down the tweeps to figure out the location. So including the location in the text or via Tweet-Geo-Location-ON is helpful. The tweet up page is http://twtvite.com/rideofsilence2012 --- RSVP is NOT required to #CHECKIN at #RIDEOFSILENCE ;-)
