Appreciate the beauty of the scenic North Branch by boat or bike and help support Friends of the Chicago River!

The Flatwater Classic began in 2000 as a fun, yet strategic, policy initiative to create visibility around water quality standards in the Chicago River. We accomplished our mission in 2010 when the Illinois Pollution Control Board agreed to strengthen water quality standards.

We’ve moved the Flatwater to the North Branch to promote the modification or removal of some of the river’s oldest and most unnecessary dams to allow for fish passage and increase paddler safety.
