There's been a ride to the Three Floyds brewpub in Munster, IN, every January since 2006. The beer is great ("there are few places more exciting from a beer lover's perspective", says the NY Times), and the menu, like the beer, is unapologetically in your face with flavor you can't avoid.
Neither snow nor rain nor sleet nor gloom of night stays these couriers (and other riders) from the swift completion of their appointed rounds (of beer). We depart Daley Plaza at 8:00 AM and collect riders at Promontory Point at 8:45 AM. I like to get there before they open at 11 (they're the seventh-best brewery in the world, so sometimes there's a line). After we complete our rounds, we may be less swift, so there are different return options: 40 miles total if you ride to Flossmoor Station and take the Metra, 45 if you ride to 93rd and take the Metra or to 100th and take the J14, 50 if you ride to 71st and take the J14, 60 if you ride both ways.
The fine print: There is no support vehicle. You are responsible for yourself. The pace is 12-15 mph with a short break at Wolf Lake. January weather can be extreme. Be prepared for cold as well as flats/mechanical problems.
Checklist:
▢ Water and snacks to have en route
▢ Lights
▢ Lock
▢ Pump, tube, tools
▢ Extra layers of clothing (more than you expect to need)
▢ Money
▢ Government-issued ID
▢ Panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago
Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, Metra Electric train schedule, Jeffrey Jump (J14) bus schedule, Bikes on the Metra, Bikes on the Bus, and, to save a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver.
PS: This ride doubles as the First Step of the 2020 Twelve Steps Challenge. Ride to Three Floyds 12 months in a row and win an awesome prize!

running a little late, but on my way!
lots of new beers!
Our second collaboration with the Mighty Amon Amarth. Inspired from the song “Skoll and Hati” from their newest album Berserker. For Skoll, The Mocker, who chases the Sun we brewed an Imperial Porter brewed with honey and aged on oak, cocoa nibs, chipotle and guajillo peppers.
A pilsner named after our favorite White Castle and Speedway located a mere 2 blocks from the brewery. This crisp, refreshing lager was brewed with a single hop variety, Spalter Select, a relatively newer hop(1993) bred at the Hull institute in Germany. The particular hops we used are unique due to the fact they are still “wet” or fresh. They have not been dried and pelletized. Instead they were picked fresh and processed in a way that the fresh hop character is preserved.
Mongolian style Pale Ale- Alpha Khan, the feared General of the Alpha King – An experimental Strong Pale brewed with lactose, and a blend of 3 hand selected teas from the Rare Tea Company.
This massive, warming ale is the third brew from our stone tanks. We used a classic Abbey ale yeast to create spicy esters and phenols like banana, anise and clove to pair with the rich malt and brown sugar notes.
Our Imperial Lactose aged in OLD TOM gin barrels. This full-bodied double IPA was aged for several months in once used gin and dry hopped a second time after barrel aging. Tasting Notes: A hazy amber ale with notes of dried fruit, graham crackers, and brown sugar followed by the lingering notes of botanicals from the barrels.
so, snow overnight and tomorrow. but Low tonight 33F so at least not ice? sun. Overcast, 10%, but sat. night Low 31F. hmm.
we can see, or just take roads
I'll ride if the snow isn't bad. Do they plow the Burnham and Wolf Lake trails?
