Helments With A Bustle

Rails, Trails, and Ales again in 2024

In the fall Metra has sometimes offered a great Saturday cycling service.  They have a special fall color train on the heritage line.  They are offering it again this year. The Heritage Line or HC follows the  Des Plaines River/Chicago Ship Canal from around Willow Springs to Joliet.  There is a special bicycle car on the train.  You still have to haul your bike up the steps, but once inside there are bike racks.  I boarded the train in downtown and egressed at Willow Springs.  From there it is…See More

Helments With A Bustle

Some bike helmets have a smooth curve in the back and many others have an extra bump.  The one I wear, Specialized Align II MIPS does.   Why the bustle? A vented helmet creates turbulence so a rear bump will have little effect.   I think shaving my goatee would have a greater aero effect than a helmet bustle.  I think the main purpose is styling or “aero look”.  Those with a bustle…See More

Bike route open during NASCAR

There is a ton of material about NASCAR street closings from June 2x through July x, but little has been published about bike and pedestrian access.   I talked to a guy wearing a STAFF lanyard yesterday.  He said the bike/pedestrian path from 11th to Lake Front Trail will be open the entire time.    Sometime Saturday, July 1st, 2023 I plan to photo going under Columbus Drive during the race.  It will show what we all know anyway; Biking is closer to the earth than NASCAR.   See More

What Chicago block has the most frequent cars in the bike lane?

I Nominate the 1100 South block of  Wabash Avenue in the southbound lane.  I rode to the drugstore tonight and other were six cars in that block blocking the paint-striped bike lane.   I did not take a picture but in the aerial view on Google Maps, there are two cars in the southbound bike lane of the 1100 S block of Wabash.    What block is your nomination?See More

The Whetstone 55th Reunion is June 18/19.  Any thoughts about your going?  I’ve decided to go but am hoping someone I remember will be there.  I missed the 50th as I was in Europe for most of the summer.  I’ve also contacted Bob Watkins and Joe Fetzer, the only others I have any information on.  Btw, I’m in Chicago area this weekend, right now in Flossmoor, moving over to Bolingbrook this afternoon (where the daughters & families are).  We’re here fairly often & I even keep one of my bicycles in Bolingbrook.  Where are you?
