I just saw that you were considering Madones... be sure to check out Sammy's bike shop in St. Charles or call to see what they have in stock used - http://www.sammysbikes.com/

Sammy's a crazy Italian racer.

When I checked in about 6 weeks ago he had several recent (like new) carbon madone frames that he took in trade for new bikes. He said he could outfit them with brand new SRAM Rival or Shimano 105 groups starting around 1300 and going up from there.  Nice way to get a lower cost carbon bike with brand new hardware.

SRAM Red is great! I felt like splurging & got a pretty good deal on Ebay for this complete setup. It had been a competitive college cyclist's team bike his freshman year (Focus, SRAM and Zipp were sponsors), but he injured himself in a cyclocross event and couldn't race for like 18 months. He actually hit a growth spurt in that time period and outgrew the bike (he's like 6'4" now and the focus is a 58cm) -admittedly, it's way more bike that I deserve or need. Never even used Apex, Rival or Force prior to this so I have no point of comparison.

I heard SRAM  RED is real good. I just have SRAM Apex on my Aluminum Specialized Secteur. I was looking at Trek Madones today. Next year I want a carbon. 100 miles, pretty long ride.

It's like butter. I took it out I&M canal trail & roads to Utica from the 'burbs to dial everything in and it was amazing. About 100 miles round trip. I was surprised how well It did with the crushed limestone/rocks that made up about 30% of our route. I can't wait to see how she handles unencumbered by bags and a backpack.

Dam that is an awesome bike. I bet it rides pretty fast! I am sporting Aluminum/ Carbon Fork these days, but my next upgrade will be full carbon.
