Bob - you are totally right! It's a shared marked lane.

Still, it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick (as they say)...  They recently painted a nice bike lane on Wells south of Division as well.  Once south of Wacker it becomes a cross between a bike lane and a sharrow (dashed lines on either side of the sharrow), right down the middle of the right lane.

It's not really a bike lane, since just a "sharrow" is being painted, which emphasizes a shared lane.

Lawrence, going west between the river and Central Park, has only shared lane makings, which is really dumb since the Kimball Brown Line terminal is right in the middle and lots of cyclists use this street to get to the CTA line.
