As a mechanical dork, all I can say is that there is one piece on your axle and the attachment has a sliding ring that when slid back, opens for sliding over the axle part. Release the ring and it grasps the on-bike part. It's from a kit similar to this one: http://www.wicycle.com/cargo_diy_kit_bicycle_trailer.php

A very nice hitch indeed. It looks like a hydraulic fitting on a piece of hose but where and how is it attached to the bike? When I zoom in the photo looses too much detail.
