Good to know about the Flip. Maybe I'll grab one when they're on "last chance before the landfill" closeout. Staples is drowning in them.
Re: Handbrake there are some major compatibilities added to the most recent update-- don't even bother with it until you've upgraded to the most current version. It choked on Aaron's piece with the version I already had, but was able to handle it with the current version.

Thanks H3, I actually had handbrake on my computer before, will probably update. Actually the Flip has an internal battery that charges through the USB port and 8gb drive. It can do 2 hours of video. Its not for shooting feature films or weddings or anything, but for web videos I think it does fine.

Er, wait-- your camera saves in "movie" format, then you convert them to AVI so they can be outputted by your movie editing software in .wmv?
You need to become an Apple weenie like, yesterday . . .
of course that's a slippery slope though-- it would only be a matter of time until you started to think Queen was pretty groovy.

I only do it so I can use the dumb Windows Movie Maker software - I know I need to buy some better software.....

Also, I'm seeing these little cameras that only do video-- it's like there was some industry decision that everyone was going to need one for christmas-- and wondering who would buy them.
Now I know . . . I think the flip uses 2 AAs? Would that even give you enough battery time to make more than a 30 minute clip?

Vando and Aaron, take a look at Handbrake.
It's available for mac and PC and the free version may do what you want. I used it to convert Aaron's wmv to .mov/MP4 for importing into iMovie.
Aaron, MPEG4 is becoming the dominant standard-- you're kind of screwing yourself by converting anything to AVI.

Maybe next storm a south side snow ride is in order?

Sorry dude, as a matter of fact I was asking because I use Imovie which doesn't play well with AVI. I use a Flip MinoHD that uses H.264 and saves as MP4. I was just wondering if you use a different camera that doesn't use AVI so I could check one out.
