First day is hilly coming out of the Loess Hills, ain't nothing you can do about it but spin your way up. Middle part of the northern side of the state has nice rollers but we cross a lot of rivers and if you're not used to Iowa, you roll fast downhill into the river bottom and then you gotta climb back out. It's not uncommon to hit 50mph coasting down to the bottom land. Gear down, grab a group with a sound system and have fun on the way back out.
We get back into hills on Friday and Saturday. Dubuque is like a bad joke, especially on TOMRV. I like hills, wish we had more of them around here.
If you've never had a saddle sore, it is debilitating. Pre and post-ride treatment is essential in aggressive prevention of saddle sores. I prefer and use Assos chamios cream for pre-ride chamios and rider treatment and the minute I change out of my bike shorts, anti-bacterial Wet Ones swing into action as well as a liberal application of the strongest OTC cortizone cream/gel you can find. Apply again after showering. Also, don't make the foolish mistake of wearing underwear in your bike shorts. It amazes me how many people you see doing this as well as applying powder in the morning. A little bit of sweat and you see these riders with a huge pile of white goo emitting from the backside of their shorts. It's quite comical.
