1. I have been a registered rider and I have "wildcatted" the entire week. Each way several times. I've done a total of 16 RAGBRAIs.
2. If you want to ride with a formal charter or club, you must register. If you're not with a group recognized by the Register, there's no reason to other than to "do the right thing" and for access to the Register's sag wagon.
I didn't have a wristband last year (I was too late for the lottery) and, while I prefer to render under Ceasar and pay the Register, I didn't notice a single thing that was different not having a rider tag. I'm telling my friends to register and keep their options open. If they don't do RAGBRAI, it will be easy to sell your rider tag.
Logistics: CUBS (Chicago Urban Bicycling Society) has some slots still open. They're very nice. Around $860 including registration, a sweet jersey and a hotel room one night. Very nice first class outfit filled with very great people. They leave out of Skokie. Stays at houses. You camp but have access to a house's bathroom, which is nice.
A little less expensive is the Illinois Charter. They're leaving from downtown Chicago on Saturday. I think I'm going with them. They're not providing support during the ride but are hooking up with the Quad Cities Bike Club.

Costs for these guys are:
These are approximate prices:
$350 transport from chicago and back. Not sag, however.
$110 sag with QCBC (Quad Cities Bike Club, the VERY FIRST RAGBRAI I did in '82 I did with this group. One of the great old groups on the ride.)
$160 RAGBRAI Registration and all in is
$620 total,
I just wanted to share what I've found out. This group will leave from downtown Chicago, which is pretty convenient.
I wold love to hear what other people are doing. Please share what options you have looked at. I also investigated Pork Belly, which is nice, but a little pricey and you'd have to get out to Iowa.
hey, anyone want to start a team? Also, know any open teams leaving from Chicago if my mother in law and I just want to join a team?
Kelly B said she'd be happy to help someone do logistics of a team with home hospitality (and sleeping in front yards)?
I think a lot of folks like to leave Friday; and have more time to get to the start; not be so rushed and start the week a day earlier.
Hey - If Kelly does the klogistics I could be totally interested in returning; even though the route sucks (thanks Craig). but I am so out of shape meybe they chose the south route for me ??? Whoooooo Nose !!!!
so most people leave sat am and drive all day to the start down, get ready, go to sleep and then start the first riding day sunday am bright and early? I just couldn't remember and thinking about doing it with my mother in law and a group... that is if Kelly B. will do our logistics again:))
Team Team left Chi-town saturday morning in 2010.
Can someone remind me when you typically leave Chicago?
Oh I registered today, Booyah!
Don't know why I keep going as RAGBRAI was a hell of lot more fun before TJ took the reins.
I am personally happy to hear that after a year of medical problems keeping me off my bike I might actually be able to ride my 15th RAGBRAI in 2014.
Will I see you at Greg's RAGBRAI presentation on February 27th?
I don't believe we've ever met.
I resemble that flabby aging rider base comment.... But I would have preferred a longer hillier route....
