I live in Chicago and have biked to Illinois Beach State Park and biked from Joliet to Starved Rock back to Joliet and camped along the way. I would love to do a fall colors trip through Wisconsin. Any of you have ideas? I'm looking at the Great Rive Road trail and the La Crosse River State Trail.
More importantly, does anyone know about bus/trains that go that way? While I can drive to Trempealeau, that means I'll have to double back to get back to my car. Is there a good loop I can do in that area? Or any area for that matter?
Thanks for your input!

I rode from Chicago to Madison over the Memorial Day weekend and I'm sure the Glacial Drumlin Trail will look nice, along with the rest of the distance. Plus you can take a bus back from Madison that will carry your bike.
I'm planning a trip from Pittsburgh to Washington for a foliage tour.
The bus from Madison to O'Hare didn't require boxing, but it was an extra $10 that goes right to the driver. We had three bikes in there with room to spare, even with a full bus. But that's a known route and someone did call ahead to confirm bikes didn't need boxing.
It's Wisconsin's loss. They've got a puppet governor that can't act in the state's best interest who's ruined the Chicago/Milwaukee/Twin Cities corridor route. At least the Chicago/St. Louis and Chicago/Detroit routes are nearly done, and hopefully Chicago/Iowa City/(Des Moines?) will go ahead, too.
i wouldnt mind something. whats peak color time around here again?
Amtrak's Empire Builder stops in La Crosse en route to Portland, OR and Seattle. Unfortunately, you have to box your bike in order to take aboard the Empire Builder. Let's see if we can get Amtrak to change this policy that hinders bike touring in Wisconsin.
