I've been putting off a tour for too long now. Probably going it alone but seeing if anyone has interest. 80-100 miles daily, 1-2 rest days. Get to see WI and MI coasts and a ferry ride!
Leaving July 4th, returning July 9 or 10.
Day 1 - Chicago to Milwaukee (Lodging with a friend)
Day 2 - to Manitowoc Ferry (Red Eye ferry on SS Badger to Ludington, WI)
~~~ Possible rest day ~~~~
Day 3/4 - Ludington to Holland area - camping
Day 4/5 - Holland to Union Pier - camp/lodge with friend
Day 5/6 - Rest in Union Pier, MI
Day 6/7 -Return to Chicago
I don't plan on bringing any cooking gear as the route is populated. Guerilla camping possible depending on the situation
If anyone knows people near Manitowoc, Ludington, Saugatuck, Holland with a place to stay, point me in their direction!
Happy 4th!
Sounds like a sweet trip. Wish I could make it.
I've heard of people camping out behind the ticket booth on the Ludington side of the ferry. And apparently that is still in effect. This journal was written on June 26th, http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=1r4vFZo&page_id=2140..., and it seems they are still cool with it.
Saugatuck Dunes State Park will be your best bet for gorilla camping there.
Good luck
Casey,
Sounds like a hell of an adventure. Did you end up doing this?
Yeah, the ride was a great time! I definitely pushed my legs with the distances and 0 rest days, but it was a very fun route; especially north of Milwaukee on the WI side and north of Union Pier on the MI side.
I'm hoping to do another section this year, maybe from Manitowac to Petoskey, through the UP, that is the section I really want to hit.
I'm planning on getting a few brevets in early this year to build my legs and considering just doing a credit card tour with a hammock for a couple nights out this year. Waiting for the warm weather to really start planning anything.
Very cool. That ferry always intrigued me. I spent all my summers as a kid just south of Traverse City... pretty country up there.
Keep me posted on your plans. I'm new to the area - just moved back after about 10 years in Kansas City - and looking on doing a few tours this spring / summer / fall.
