Let me admit right up front that this isn't necessarily the most practical idea of all time—but it could be a lot of fun.
I've been wanting to ride a brevet with the
Great Lakes Randonneurs for a while. The problems being that I don't drive and I'm cheap, meaning that it would be tricky for me to get there and that I'm not all that interested in paying for a hotel room.
Since there's a
campsite near the start point of the brevets, though, it occurs to me that it riding up on a Friday, camping out, riding the brevet on Saturday, camping out again, and then riding back on Sunday would be doable.
This would be a lot of riding, as Delavan is about 100 miles from Hyde Park, and the brevet itself is 124 miles, but the ride there and back doesn't need to be taken in a hurry, and you have 13.5 hours to complete the brevet itself. Delavan is also about 15 miles away from the Harvard Metra, which allows up to 20 bikes on weekends, so if riding back Sunday proved a bridge too far it wouldn't be much hassle to get back on the rails.
The July 17 200k seems like a good date as it would give mildly fit but not especially hardcore people (like, well, me) time to get into shape for an ambitious but not undoable ride. Does this sound interesting to anyone?
