Hi, I have only ridden road bikes and cyclocross bikes for all of my riding. I am very dedicated to riding, and find fixed gear bikes of great interest lately. I don't know the first thing about them, but know my way around road bikes pretty well. Could someone suggest a place to go to learn about/purchase my first fixie without getting one that I will quickly outgrow as I learn the "culture". Thanks, I welcome your suggestions.
Hi vxla, I have three affordable options in white. I can pc Model T frames (2 weeks) any color for $350, which includes a fork. The Soma Rush comes in pearl white with the main (though not all) decals removeable. Those are $300. And... I don't remember exactly how tall you are, but I do have a demo 58cm frame in cream. It's double butted Tange Prestige with track drops and canti bosses. $200. Yay for rain...
Love your bikes as always J. I don't suppose you want to sell me a white frameset (something with rigid angles and horizontal dropouts)? I'm in need of replacing my current fixed frameset.
I think it was around 1995 ~freshman or sophomore year of high school for me. And these are the same spd's I used on my trek 930 way back then...brought out of retirement (a fixed income; hee hee - couldn't resist the joke).

I started Riding Clipless Pedals in 1992 and have not gone back!
So I've been riding clipless on my road bike since always, and I finally got some shoes so I can use my old spd's on my fixed commuter! The 3/4 to clips I was using in the summer were ok, but due to the need for a waterproof shoe in the winter, I had to switch to platforms. Yuck. So today was my first fixed/clipless ride and I was in heaven. HOORAY FOR CLIPLESS PEDALS!! Now we just need some designers to start making more sport/casual spd shoes for everyday use - the selection is terrible.
My shop also sells Dolan, and I'd agree with your friend -- if you are looking for an aluminum frame and/or maximum stiffness, it's probably the best branded frameset under $500 built specifically for track racing. The stock fork is very high quality, the angles are aggressive and the 52mm BB drop ideal for velodromes.
Here are a couple of fixies I built at work this week. And before you ask, yes the green bike's saddle height is correct. This setup is after a 45 minute fit session. The fellow is just real spidery.
my friend who works at smart bike suggested a dolan kadet for me when I was looking for a frame for the velodrome. It looks like a great deal for the price. I still haven't bought a frame yet, but if I do it will probably be a dolan.
